Effects of Ionic Strength of Nutrient Solution on the Growth and Yield of Cucumber Plant Grown by Deep Flow Technique (DFT)

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to investigate the optimum ionic strength of nutrient solution for increasing growth and fruit yield of cucumber plants grown in DFT system. Nutrient solution were treated with quarter, half, standard and twofold ionic strength of balanced nutrient solution of Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station. Growth characteristics and fruit yield were recorded and summarized as follows; 1. Plant height and leaf area were retarded as decreasing the ionic strength of nutrient solution. Fresh and dry weight of each organs were significantly different between the plot of twofold and standard ionic strength but reduced markedly in the plot of lower strength. 2. LAI (leaf area index) was increased with increasing the ionic strength of nutrient solution, however, the adverse was true in the NAR (net assimilation rate). 3. Fruit yield was highest in the plot of standard ionic strength as of 1,121g per plant but reduced with decreasing the ionic strength of nutrient solution. 4. The rate of curved fruit was lowered in the plot of twofold ionic strength as of 17 percent than the other plots and club fruit rate was not observed in the plot of twofold and standard ionic strength. Club fruit occurred greatly as decreasing ionic strength of nutrient solution as of 29 percent in half and 50 percent in quarter ionic strength of nutrient solution.
